Episode 74 — Superman in the 70s

With Superman now officially 75, and to help celebrate the event even further, the next 2 episode of Superman in the Bronze Age will take an overall look at the Bronze Age of Superman. In this episode, we look at the 70s. From the editorial shake up that started the decade to the popularity resurgence by the end of the decade (thanks to a little movie). It’s pretty groovy.

Remember how, during the last episode, Jon Wilson (Golden Age Superman, New 52 Adventures of Superman) and I talked about the first 2 chapters of the 1977 Superman Spectacular? Well, this time out, we cover the final 2 chapters of that story. And this ends up taking so long, that we’re going to need a 3rd episode to cover the other feature in this issue, but more on that at the end of the episode. Meanwhile, the incredible J David Weter heads to the 2970s as Superboy and the Legion face the “Wrath of the Devil-Fish!”

Continuing our celebration of Superman’s 75th year by looking at the more monumental Superman tales of the Bronze Age, we take a look at one of the projects that were part of Superman’s 40th anniversary. This Superman Spectacular featured the longest, at the time, single issue Superman tale. As such, I recruited a bit of help for the next 3 episodes in the form of Jon Wilson, host of Golden Age Superman and co-host of the New 52 Adventures of Superman with J David Weter. Speaking of Dave, he presents a tale of Superboy and the Legion of Superheroes that features the return of a legionaire that was thought to be dead!

Episode 68 — The Man Who Created Superman

You can’t celebrate 75 years of Superman without honoring his creators: Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. Over the years, there have been several stories either dedicated to them or create in homage to them. The first story to do this in the Bronze Age was in Action Comics 447, when writer Elliott S! Maggin combined the 2 into one man who creates his own Superman stories. And considering that this is before they finally got their creator credits back in the comic books, this was a pretty big deal. And in our back-up feature, J David Weter takes us through a book length adventures to celebrate Superboy’s 200th issue, in a story that include the wedding of Bouncing Boy and Duo Damsel? All this and more in yet another thrill-packed episode!

Episode 67 — Vartox’s Mystery Mission to Metropolis

For the 67th episode, we move up a few months to Superman 281, where Superman first met Vartox, an older hero from another world who, while being an ally of the Man of Steel, would often end up having to go against our favorite hero. Plus, he was based on Sean Connery’s appearance in the box office clunker Zardoz. Seriously, look at the image below and compare it to the image above to see what I mean.

Not only that, but J David Weter tells us all about “The Gun that Mastered Men” in another thrilling installment of Superboy and the Legion of Superheroes in the Bronze Age.

Episode 66 — Make Way for Captain Thunder!
